Central American Pygmy-Owl is another key species at the lodge. Cuery y Salado Preserve protects a coastal mangrove system full of wildlife from monkeys to trogons. Now, dont get me wrong, there have been some nice birds, and locations in between, but these two experiences are just so hard to put out of my mind. The show stopper was his Eagle-owl. Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. Owls (because they merit target status everywhere).

The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. This immature Verreaux’s Eagle-owl was one of the first birds I saw at Kruger, on the introductory afternoon ride through the park. Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls are amongst the heaviest and longest owls in the world.

Much of Wingate’s professional life revolved around his grand plan to create a “living museum” of pre-colonial Bermuda flora and fauna on Nonsuch Island, a habitat where the cahows would be protected and supported. It was declared a National Park (Monumento Natural) in 1981 to protect the nesting of up to 25,000 flamingos and many other water-foul and birds that depend on this fragile ecosystem, the Puna. Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. Oh, there were Buffy Fish-owls.
