While the reedbeds along this town’s southern shore are not actually standing in water right now, the soil is still wet enough to keep them green and, apparently, keep them from burning.

Further support for inherent behavior comes from experiments. In another experiment, other species of Darwin Finches were kept next to Woodpecker Finches that used tools. It may take just being at the right place at the right time. They only need to master the technique by practicing; they are born knowing what to do.

It is also fascinating to see how similar Old World trogons look to their New World relatives, right down to the same flamboyant color patterns. The Elegant Trogon prefers drier habitats, with a predominance of oaks rather than conifers, and in my experience is much harder to find.

I savor the timeless experience of scanning these tropical waves for storm-petrels and lost jaegers. As it learns to hunt and live on its own, the young bird has taken up residence in a tree right in front of the farm. Like a spy or avian investigator, I can scope them right through the front door, watch them at will.

Peeps and Beer!

So, the next best thing, and arguably a slightly more palatable option for me, was to investigate beer and Peep pairings. Admittedly, it’s not a revelatory gastronomic experience, but the pairing does work: the robust, roasted flavors of the beer make up for the relatively bland sweetness of the Peeps.
