Algeciras, Spain, to be specific — right around the bay from Gibraltar. A Peregrine Falcon was seen in the distance, one of the day’s few species I could also have seen in Mexico. The first to turn up were Egyptian Vultures , majestic birds in their own right. One European Sparrowhawk turned up.

That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations.

This female Streak-backed Oriole is the rightful nest owner. As it happens, there were no Martins to be found that day. Seeing one?

This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. As the sun began to set, a flock of Mexican Parrotlets alighted in a tree with brilliant red bark, and we all noticed a Bat Falcon watching silently from a high perch above all the action down below.

The open, dry habitat was perfect for it and the experience was so real, it was almost painful to wake up but alas, no Loggerhead Shrike, just a vivid dream of a migrant bird that could make a mega appearance in Costa Rica. My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. Common Kingfisher , Common Hoopoe and the European Bee-eater come from their nesting holes at the high loess-bluff of the opposite, right bank of the river. “I would certainly recommend Serbia to visiting birders.

A female Mallard was running on the water right out of the thickets, flapping its wing frantically. … To everyone’s delight, a Saker Falcon soon appeared, offering excellent views as it banked in a long stoop after a hapless distant passerine. I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. I am scoping Great Cormorants roosting in their colony in the (now dry) flooded forest, there is one… eagle to the right of them. I am right, Kostas confirms, it is a Greater Spotted Eagle. Birding the Dry Tortugas in late April has always been high on my bucket-list of the best birding experiences in North America. Day-trips to the Dry Tortugas are of course possible but the best way to experience the islands is on an extended 3-day guided tour. There are photographs of buteos soaring overhead and harriers gliding low, of eagles coming at you head-on and flying away with only the tail in focus, of falcons backlit and kites in shadows.
