It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)). A Shaft-tailed Whydah, a member of a small African family of cuckoo-finches. Purple Roller. Some Red-billed Oxpeckers on some big thing.

It was the perfect experience, the guide had astonishing eyes and found things we would have passed over if we had been alone.

Run along the same lines as the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary, the site has had a large fence placed around it and the introduced mammals removed. It’s a model that is now happening across New Zealand, and it was nice to experience it near my friend’s house in Taranaki. New Zealand fantails were very common.

Almost as soon as we left the grounds we came a cross a feeding flock of Pygmy Ibon , a minute type of white-eye (already a small family), and then a handful of bizarre looking Dusky Broadbills (they look like they are manically grinning) perched over a river. There are plenty of places you can get lots of birds cheaply, on a shoe string.
