Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all. Personally I wasn’t happy, but I do not live there and do not have a septic tank in my backyard, so I felt that I had no right to complain.

In the morning, still sleepy, we enter the jungle, where a sounder of Indian Boars (a long-maned subspecies Sus scrofa cristatus ) is watching us, standing among the first trees, right next to the road. Even in protected areas of north-east India, prey densities are very low. One White-eyed Buzzard has turned its back to us.

My guess is, those nervous ones were some migrants, while the majority were locally breeding birds – the southernmost population of Europe! After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. One raft of 20+ Mallards swims by the bank, right in front of jackals, careless like if they were just two sheep!

As of the last few days, I have a lovely young couple, with a nest right out side my gallery door, in a palm tree. It is possible that the dense growth allows for great protection and nesting areas. This lovely dove has been imported from Europe, and is found living mostly in the suburban areas of North America, and Mexico.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. One would think that for a species as common in Europe as the Grey-headed Woodpecker , the HBW would spend some effort to update the species entry. Unexplainably, it feels right to follow the waters towards the delta. mi from the first one (inside the village), we turn right into the hills and onto the Forgotten Road birding route. Not a falcon, but a female Eurasian Sparrowhawk , drying its soaked feathers after the rain that was falling while we were protected by the trees.
