The Common Gallinule , is the most wide spread of all the members of the rail family, being found from Canada, to Chile, Europe, Asia, Africa, much of the Pacific, and the Galapagos Islands. That is all I have ever known them to be.

Longclaws are African members of the pipit and wagtail family, and unlike the rest of the family they have gorgeously-coloured throats. A terrible shot of Barrow’s Korhaan.

I was hoping to find a White-throated Dipper during a trip to the Peak District National Park, but had not had time to do my research, so was relying on the expertise of boutique owners in the picturesque village. White-throated Dippers are typical of their family in that they like fast flowing rivers with protruding rocks.

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies.

Wrynecks are fascinating because they are woodpeckers, taxonomically and evolutionarily, yet they do not share many behaviors and anatomical features of most members of the Picidae family. But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family. They are beautiful, but in a different way.

I suppose this works with such a small family, but it made my librarian brain ache just a little bit. Browsing through this book is tough.
