It was an unexpected bird tour, without too much planning and aimed at a few target species, of which we saw most, but the main one eluded us… Early morning, leaving the last houses behind… and a Little Owl awaits us on a traffic sign. Despite the rainy forecast, the weather was pleasantly tropical: sun, a short shower and more sun.

This past Friday, after leaving Cupsogue where my twitch for the Wilson’s Plover had ended in success I decided to head back over to Big Egg Marsh in my home borough of Queens to see if I could rediscover the Burrowing Owl I had seen the previous evening could be rediscovered. Here they are a common breeding bird, one of our two species that migrate from here to Europe and then south. I had hoped to have some Semipalmated Plover chick photos for comparison but as of last night they seem to be still at the egg stage. A short time after hatching, these chicks are up and mobile and very fast.

I found this little grouping of Guillemots, with parents, babies and even an egg. While there were way less Puffins than any of the other species, they are still so much fun to see. Red Kites were considerted a Threatened Species starting in the early ‘80s, and a nation wide program was started to re-introduce them around the UK.

Friends of mine came home from those lakes with tales of Sandhill Cranes , Snowy Owls with eggs in the nest and others. A tantalizing report from them included a brown owl, the likely suspect a Short-eared Owl slightly north of its accepted range. Few things indeed.

Our group got to see another species that is a master of camouflage on our trip for the Honduran Emerald. I had seen Thick-Knees in South Africa, but I was very excited to see this species, which is the only member of its family found in Central America. And, I didn’t even touch on the owls!

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. Speaking of pregnant snakes, do sea snakes lay their eggs ashore like sea turtles or do they keep them internally until the young are ready to hatch/ be born, like some sharks?

It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. This area offers Mexico’s greatest concentration of endemics, as well as very few species an American birder might have already seen up north. And for the first time, I saw a Bronzed Cowbird (which lays its eggs in other birds’ nests) checking out one of these nests. The same could be said about so many other species.

Once the egg has been laid, the female is chased away and the males hatch it.” My possible birdwatching highlight this month was Short-eared Owl at Fengxian. eBird seems to be critical of this species’ work ethics, stating that “it flies lazily over open fields or marshes” Maybe the owl is just sleepy, not lazy.

There is a good mix of bird species both large and small. We moved in slowly and soon observed that there was a well camouflaged nest with one egg in it. Black-fronted Dotterel nest with one egg. You just have to go birding on your birthday really, because you never know what might show up. A goanna-once again well camouflaged.
