One of the highlights of the trip for me, and for some of the other media folks being hosted by the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority, was a kayak tour of Tule Lake in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. The place was lousy with Swainson’s Hawks , and we may even have spotted a distant Golden Eagle.

Not only did it fly in but it attacked a Bald Eagle! The Bald Eagle was flying upside-down with talons up trying to ward off the small white falcon! Brian Laben had a wonderful experience seeing this rarity in upstate New York (or, is that mid-state? Within 15 minutes the Gyrfalcon flew in. After that, the Gyrfalcon was gone.

That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts. Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo.

After a pleasant morning with ducks, crisp snow and sunshine, we followed the wildlife trail on our way out. We admired the Bison in the frozen fields and saw a juvenile Golden Eagle which was both beautiful and a lifer for my hosts. We stopped at Rosie’s Diner. I can recommend it.

My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. Black Stork and three pairs of White-tailed Eagles breed here. Great wildlife preserves, reserves and parks exist for a number of reasons. The species found are a mix of savannah and desert species, including some impressive birds of prey like the Martial Eagle and African Hawk-eagle. But I think it should be on the list of anyone that wants a knockout experience to share with non-birders.

A good way up one of the tallest pines is an Eagle’s nest. Every year there manage to be two eagles up there in that nest. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle. You can tell when the Eagle is aloft because the Loons alarm call. Every now and then you see an Eagle and a Loon interact a bit. So, no Eagles maybe.
