So, off I went in my rental car, with the “Do Not Drive Off Paved Roads” notice in bold print on the rental agreement… right, sure, no problem. Gold-crowned Sparrows were found around many of the salmon filled streams. Savanah Sparrow. Aleutian Song Sparrow. Gold-crowned Sparrow. Fox Sparrow.

I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy. We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. Baird’s Sparrow was one of those elusive creatures.

Some wild Grey Ducks from the Northern Territory ( GDW45 Creative Commons ). By the 1970s the Mallards were beginning to rule the roost.

White-throated Sparrow. Not impeded by branches or the need to bushwhack, we could paddle right up close to the sound, in this case the merry singing of a White-throated Sparrow. We watched the sparrows bounce back and forth before being distracted by a familiar witchety-witchety-witchety call further down the bank.

Then, to finish the week, we visited the famous, and not necessarily for all the right reasons, Malhuer Wildlife Refuge. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon. There was a large population of Western Grebes on the lake.

By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Ferruginous Duck – year round. Spanish Sparrow – still ill-numbered but, since recently, breeding near the city. Black-crowned Night and Purple Herons – spring/summer.

I know these winds had a lot of the birds all settled in, and not moving much, but right off the bat, I got a new Lifer, in a pair of Nuttall’s Woodpeckers. This extremely common duck, just never comes to Mexico. The new lifers are the Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Lincoln Sparrow, Oak Titmouse , and the Wrentit!

Out on one of the rocks that were visible during low tide, a small group of Harlequin Ducks had gathered. Right after getting the anchor set, what to my eyes should I see, but several P urple Martins flying above the boat! My Eastern Sibley served me well, replacing the Peterson’s with which I learned my ducks and waders. A guide that feels so right in my hands? I was a little sad to see that the newer editions don’t have the second signature birds (Wood Duck for Eastern, Tufted Puffin for Western) and regional maps on the spine.

This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Nearly 800 acres of wetlands and tidal flats provide diverse habitat for the local birds, as well as large numbers of migratory species, including thousands of ducks and geese.

Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow. The name change of a small brown bird, a sparrow, is exciting. Split from birds in northern Central America (the White-faced Ground-Sparrow ), the Cabanis’s becomes a very special bird. Not every list has Great Tinamou on it. Ducks and geese certainly make up the bulk of the observations. Gulls, pelicans, oystercatchers, and a few sparrows. In addition, there is an actual ” right leg, left leg, above and below the knee” set of marking patterns. as well in my photographs. I have over 200 waterfowl that I have recorded those shiny bands on.

Green-winged Teal : It might not sound exciting for birders slinging their binos in the temperate zone, but this fancy little duck is a heck of a rare sight in Costa Rica. The same goes for Rusty, Grasshopper, and Botteri’s Sparrows , a trio of resident sparrows that eluded some serious time and effort in looking for them.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. My first ever Gamble’s Quail were feeding right next to the picnic area, and alongside the visitors center building, I spotted a thrasher. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks.

We ran across this Common Back Hawk right alongside the mangrove swamp. After hours of tromping thru the muck of a mangrove swamp, we found this Gartered Trogon on the wire right above the car. We actually found quite a few of the Stripe-headed Sparrows, but mostly they were very early, when there was not much light.
