The Common Moorhen still is in Germany what its name implies: common. Well, it is rather common and can even be scarce regionally, but overall it is not a difficult bird to find in Germany so long as a cunning birder frequents reedy wetlands. Beware of Crocodiles.

It was recently brought to my attention that identifying birds is easy when the birds look like we tell them to, but not so easy when the birds don’t: I was scanning a few ponds when a fly-by trio of ducks caused me excitement, concern, and to write this post. I mean, the Gadwall is one of the most common ducks in Germany.

The origin of this expression clearly lies in the slow, dopey waddling gait of a duck on land.

As my parents live in Bonn in Germany, I have been birding a few times in some spots surrounding the city when visiting them over the last few years, including the Siegaue (riverine and grassy habitats) and the Siebengebirge (mainly forest). Very rarely, Barnacle Geese are also seen feeding on the lawn, probably on passage.

During the early 1990s, rumours surrounding the occurrence of a few Egyptian Geese in far north-western Germany emerged, the result of an increasing and spreading Dutch feral population. Predictably, it contained few surprises (and no lifers either) as Germany took lock-down regulations seriously and travel, even locally, was next to impossible throughout most of the year.
