Lema Ranch has several ponds and is always a great spot for waterfowl but I was surprised to find four Snow Geese on secluded pond! The ranch’s ponds yielded several Ring-necked Ducks … large numbers of American Wigeon … several Bufflehead … and Pied-billed Grebes. Wild Turkeys were out in full display.

New Zealand had a widespread dabbling duck, the Grey Duck ( Pacific Black Duck if you’re an Aussie) but these were declining a in number because of changes to their habitat.

Down in the water, I added Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Canada Geese , and yes, don’t laugh…my first Mallards of the year. This extremely common duck, just never comes to Mexico. On my way back to the RV Park, I was able to photograph my first Gold-crowned Sparrows , since my trip to Kodiak Alaska, 3 years ago.

This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. There was also a small raft of Ruddy Ducks. Nearly 30,000 of these acres is set aside as dry wilderness habitat for other birds, animals and other various living creatures.

You can take in views of waterfowl including Eurasian Wigeon , Barnacle Geese , Trumpeter Swan , and a plethora of ducks and gulls. The birds however, weren’t as plentiful in the walk-able area in and around the city, but I still got to glimpse some thrush, t**s, sparrows, swallows, Jackdaws and the familiar Hooded Crow.

But Northern Cardinal, Catbird, and White-throated Sparrow do not appear until the 270s, during a visit to Central Park while on business trip to New York City. Lifers includes Gambel’s Quail and Neotropic Cormorant, but the real highlights were the morning fly-out of Sandhill Cranes and the evening fly-in of Snow Geese.

Out on one of the rocks that were visible during low tide, a small group of Harlequin Ducks had gathered. A pair Bald Eagles were doing fly-bys over our heads , and there were Belted Kingfishers, Canada Geese , A pair of Mallards, and three Great Blue Herons. Here is one of them standing in the kelp.

At first I dismissed them for some hybrid geese, until I recognized their JIZZ. In my homeland, some 800 km / 500 mi further north, these ducks are common on migration but very rare in the breeding season and I realized that these are my first young birds – ever. Western Grebes, Clark’s Grebes, Wood Ducks, American White Pelicans, and a few Short-billed Dowitchers made up some of the highlights. The north end of Abert Lake had close to 10,000 ducks and geese on it, so you can imagine how excited I was to get to Malhuer! There was a large population of Western Grebes on the lake.

There were plenty of birds on the water to keep me entertained, with close to 60 Greylag geese, 50 Canada Geese, 80 Wigeon, 250 Coots, plus a good assortment of Tufted Ducks, Gadwall, Shoveler and Mallard. I arrived, equipped with my telescope, long before dusk. However, gull numbers were poor: just three Herring Gulls.

The longspurs proved more elusive: though we found both Horned Larks and Snow Buntings , to say nothing of an “Ipswich” Savannah Sparrow we failed to find a single longspur.
