We spent awhile scanning the lagoons and were rewarded for our efforts with a host of Ruddy Ducks , a pair of Blue-winged Teal , lots of Common Gallinules and a bunch of American Coots which would have been a lot more exciting if they were still Caribbean Coots. As we walked from the car park to the bird hide we noticed a family of Magpie Geese on the edge of the billabong. Family of Magpie Geese. There were good numbers of Green Pygmy-geese, Comb-crested Jacana, Great and Intermediate Egrets, Magpie Geese and a family of Black-necked Storks. There was only the one Australian Pelican present and a pair of Royal Spoonbills and the constant annoying racket from the Masked Lapwings! .

The week of President’s Day this year found me, my family, and some close friends spending a week in a beach house on Tybee Island, a low-lying, barrier island just east of Savannah. Boat-tailed Grackles were ubiquitous and at any time a Brown Pelican could fly overhead. It didn’t get any.

There was a family of Black-necked Storks that was initially a family group, but over recent weeks they have started to feed separately. Female Black-necked Stork “kneeling” Australian Pelicans feed along the Fitzroy River and are usually in the more tidal area of the river. Australian Pelicans. Great Egret.

The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks. Magpie-larks are neither magpies nor larks but are the largest of the monarch-flycatchers, and the most terrestrial of the family.

As we wandered along the trail we soon encountered family groups of both White-winged Fairywrens and Variegated Fairywrens. Little Black Cormorants and Australian Pelican. Moving closer to the remaining water we soon observed Pacific Black Ducks , one lone Grey Teal , an Intermediate Egret and a Great Egret , a juvenile Black-necked Stork and a lone Australian Pelican. Beyond the Mutton Hole wetlands we soon stopped to observe a Sarus Crane family feeding near Corduroy Creek and then we encountered more and more Brolga and Sarus Cranes all the way to Karumba. Silver Gulls , Crested Terns, Caspian Terns, Gull-billed Terns, Pelicans and a White-bellied Sea-Eagle were observed in this area.

Lesser Whistling Duck were flying around, and a Black-naped Oriole provided a nice flash of colour. One interesting experience here was finding a baby terrapin on the road and picking it up to move it only for peter to call out a Common Iora , one of my two lifer families of the day.
