There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

As birders, we tend to spend more time in wetlands than most of our peers, neighbors, and family members. Unless those non-birding folks happen to be duck hunters or love to go fishing, they tend to stay away from the marshes, the riparian zones, the bottom lands. It doesn’t exactly sun bathe but the name still fits.

So if you come to Spring Wings, and you’d be well served if you do, get ready to see lots and lots of shorebirds and ducks and waders. Our guide, former wildlife refuge manager Mike Goddard, pointed out a pair of Cinnamon Teal in flagrante delicto. Yellow-headed Blackbirds singing in the reeds allowed us to get an arm’s length away.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

I went to the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival in Titusville, Florida. Mottled Duck ? We had a wonderful family vacation in Germany and the Czech Republic during which I managed to do a bit of birding. What happened at the end of January? Florida Scrub Jay ? Crested Caracara and Snail Kite ? Check and check.
