There are beautiful beaches, a plethora of amazing food and drinks, a multitude of family fun locations, a world-renowned zoo, and one of the biggest birding festivals in the US. My family visited San Diego every year as part of a Disneyland-SoCal Road trip to escape the rainy Christmases at home near Portland, Oregon.

So if you come to Spring Wings, and you’d be well served if you do, get ready to see lots and lots of shorebirds and ducks and waders. The specials for our dinner at The Slanted Porch in Fallon included dishes prepared from cows and lambs raised by local 4-H Club kids.). (The town is actually nicknamed “The Oasis of Nevada.”)

We spent awhile scanning the lagoons and were rewarded for our efforts with a host of Ruddy Ducks , a pair of Blue-winged Teal , lots of Common Gallinules and a bunch of American Coots which would have been a lot more exciting if they were still Caribbean Coots. This Puerto Rican Woodpecker was our second sighting of an endemic for the day.

It is a little tradition we started when we were not both working on Christmas Day and a great way to pass the day when you don’t have family in the same state or time zone! The variety of ducks was good and especially the high presence of Pink-eared Ducks. Pink-eared Ducks and Grey Teal. Black-fronted Dotterel.
