On the final leg of my “Old Home Week”, I travel out to Dog Lake, a pristine high mountain lake, surrounded by mature Ponderosa Pines. Heading down the highway… I am so out of here… Arriving at Dog Lake, is another one of those incredible moments when hundreds of amazing memories come crashing back.

Not long after the move my friend and I were walking our dogs, early in the morning, when the dogs discovered something tiny lying in the middle of the sidewalk. Just to make sure, however, I shooed the dogs away and checked it out. And that he brought his friends and family back to my feeders. It was still alive.

While hoopoes are in their own family, DNA studies suggest that the hoopoe diverged from hornbills, and the wood-hoopoes and scimitarbills from the hoopoe. Others are being killed for use in traditional medicine. Of course, the second explanation makes a lot more sense. This can lead to birds being poisoned.

The interesting thing is that it was not a first time, when David saved poor animals out of a fire: ten years before he has already taken a wounded dog after the fire to the North Shore Animal League, where he was cured. On a very quiet night during a lull in the drama of the ducks, I was researching the Greyhound racing industry, and seething over its treatment of dogs as well as the support it often gets, through subsidies, to help it survive. And you can’t drive on the Interstate without seeing signs telling you when to exit for the “Dog Track.”
