The definition of a borrow pit is rather odd, because you are not actually borrowing anything. It is often a lot hotter there than closer to the coast and many bird species roost in the area or come in for a drink and bathe during the day. It was an undeniably dank morning at the top of this island watershed, and even though we were able to discern some other species like Rufous-tailed Jacamar and the endemic Trinidad Motmot , activity was a bit slow. With the extent of the tall vegetation many species have been able to breed and hide for many months and now they are becoming more visible from the highway. There is ample food for many species and you can clearly see the small fish around the culverts. There are also a lot more Red-kneed Dotterels and Black-fronted Dotterels visible.

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Go check it out! Get yours today!

There were a total of 69 Royal Spoonbills and 2 Yellow-billed Spoonbills , but you had to look carefully to see the two different species. The stand-out bird species for the day was definitely the large flock of Royal Spoonbills , though. I have observed thousands of Plumed Whistling-Ducks heading to the Poo Ponds this week.

We definitely didn’t need a television! Plumed-whistling-ducks , a lone swimming Wandering Whistling-duck , a Pacific Black Duck and a Little Black Cormorant. Plumed Whistling-ducks. This is not a species that loves to be seen, but one helpfully posed on a fencepost for me (although it was early, and a hurricane off the coast was giving us dense clouds with intermittent rains, so the light was bad). A pair of flyover American Black Ducks , a flock of Green-winged Teal winging west way out over the ocean, and surprisingly, all three of our expected falcon species were all seen relatively early in the morning. Osprey are nice but after awhile you wish one would be a different species. The birders kept coming too!

We packed a thermos each day and this was definitely essential at this time of year, especially if you are used to warmer weather! There were numerous Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks on the bank with Yellow Chats running among them to drink. Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks. The Radjah Shelduck s, Pacific Black Ducks , Grey Teal , Pink-eared Ducks , Plumed Whistling-Ducks and Hardheads were mostly stood in the shade on the far bank.

It is really good to be home and back with our familiar birds and although we have already seen 320 species this year they have been mostly away from home.
