Huizaches, Granjenos, and Nopales

Chief among these are three trees, known here as Huizaches (Sweet Acacia, Vachellia farnesiana), Granjenos (Spiny Hackberry, Celtis ehernbergiana), and Nopales (Prickly Pear, various species). But the area would not be home for more than 120 species, if it were not for those thorny trees. Humans like me enjoy eating them, too!

My First Birdathon

Typically, team members fan out across their region, counting as many species as they possibly can from 12:00 a.m. Of course, nothing is typical about 2020. By the time migration rolled around, we were all sheltering in place. Who would see more species? By the end of our Earth Day Birdathon, I had tallied 39 species.

Bird Counts and Cold Fronts in Costa Rica

That’s where Costa Rica is situated of course and is partly why so many birds live here. It’s par for the course in December, Costa Rica, and unfortunately, often coincides with our annual bird counts. It’s also why 60 degrees f. is considered “cold” by many locals and why 50 is downright frigid.

Of course, we insist they do talk to medical professionals if their problems are especially serious.) Some scientists suggest that our brains may be hard-wired to relate the color with a place of food, shelter and safety. My day will be great whether I see 80 species or only 30. Green is good.

When it comes to one’s most exciting bird sightings, of course, it all comes down to context. Plus a few truly difficult species. Sure, it is an introduced species in Germany. So seeing this beautiful (though common) European species was a special treat. But… Been there, done most of those.

But he really appreciated the Surf Scoters he saw at Shinnecock Inlet out in Suffolk County on Long Island on Saturday so he chose that species. Winter has come early and often to Western NY.
