Although 40 Chinese animal rights groups have protested, they don't really have any political or financial clout to change anything.

The many small ponds and waterways attract quite a few ducks, though presumably due to their China experience, they are extremely wary of people. While it is listed as Least Concern, it is rare in China – the range map in the HBW barely touches Chinese territory. Most likely, both parties are right. According to the HBW, captive wild-caught juveniles from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in China tend to prefer black and red fruits over yellow, green or blue fruits. Blue-throated Barbet s apparently also have color preferences related to their food.

Despite not being rare in China, this was the first time for me to see Carrion Crow at Nanhui. The Chestnut Bunting is quite a beauty, particularly when seen from the right angle. Bull-headed Shrike clearly deserves its name. One of the birds seemed somewhat incompetent in handling the seeds of the local trees.
