With travel restrictions still in place, going on a birding trip outside of China is still not a practical option. Fortunately, China itself has a large number of bird species and habitats. I guess it is pretty common in many areas of China, but not in Shanghai, so it is still a special bird for me.

Birding Mengbishan, Sichuan, China

As often in China, the choice seems to be between terrible infrastructure and almost no people or great roads accompanied by caravans of tour buses. Currently, the heavy trucks passing by right next to the main birding road occasionally do add a bit of a non-birding-related thrill to birding at Mengbishan.

In fact, indeed one or two of the Japanese-language bird books I own have this species on their cover. In what may be the nicest thing a woman has ever said to a man, she replies “Well, my friend, you’ve come to the right place.” Another attractive species on offer is the Chinese White-browed Rosefinch.

One recent study found that this species was sister to P. perdix , and also that race przewalskii (sometimes subsumed within suschkini , but generally paler) was basal to other taxa included within the present species. barbata , but present name has priority. So, I later looked this up.

China’s massive investment in infrastructure has indirectly benefited birders. Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. On Balangshan, two species of accentors similarly utilize different levels of altitude. And it is a great place for birding.
