Black-necked Storks at Myalls Bore near Derby

Whenever we make a trip to Derby we pull over seven kilometres before we get to town at Myalls Bore and the 120 metre long cattle trough. We have seen the cattle trough enough times to know there is not a lot of bird-life using it, because it is easier for the birds to use the water that overflows from the bore to make a wetland.

The Change in Seasons

The often overlooked Cattle Egret has legs that turn bright pink during this brief courtship period. Even species that do not undergo visible changes (to us, at least) begin to behave differently. Gifts are presented, heads are bowed, and tails are cocked. Are we ready to welcome the next season?

White-winged Black Terns and Whiskered Terns near Broome

This resulted in no large flocks of Oriental Pratincoles in the area during the past few months and less Terns than in other years when there have been more locusts present. The cattle moved away from the flooded areas and the area beside the highway is home to many species of birds.

A World Turned Upside Down

The former should number at least a hundred thousand individuals each winter, while the latter should be present in the tens of thousands. Mexican Ducks were also present; these are residents in the area, but not normally on this body of water. Now, this has some major importance for migratory waterfowl and shorebirds.

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. This endearing and very familiar species grabbed the attention of all present, including the official event photographer from the THA! Our little group managed a final tally of 56 species!

Hawking for Nighthawks

The cows and their entourage of Cattle Egrets sloshed through the pastures, each time they moved we lurched forward hoping to see a disturbed Grey-breasted Crake hop into view – but alas, no such luck even though we were hearing the little skulkers consistently. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also. Great Blue Heron.

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.
