Munkajarra Wetlands near Derby

Munkajarra Wetlands is always a good location for the various duck species and you can expect to observe Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Pacific Black Ducks , Hardheads , Grey Teal and sometimes Radjah Shelducks and Pink-eared Ducks. Dollarbirds are often present for the wet season months. Purple Swamphens.

Hawking for Nighthawks

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Two species of icterids populated the area, the presence of either was a direct indicator of the degree of water present. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also.

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. Our little group managed a final tally of 56 species!

From there, we entered a side tributary full of Ringed and Amazon Kingfishers , with Chestnut-fronted and Scarlet Macaws in flight… and then the noise: groans, croaks and grunts… and the smell… of this 65 million years old species, so old that the last dinosaurs must have fed on them!

That honor goes to the Gray-crowned Crane , a very sexy species in its own right. The Shoebill does not simply present itself but rather, like any object of ardent affection, must be pursued diligently. Of course, we did, soaking in that slate blue beauty long enough to observe a successful hunt and more of its rangy, awkward flight.

Birding across the north of Australia in July

On other occasions we would encounter numerous caravans being towed or large trucks up to 54 metres long transporting fuel or cattle and we would wisely leave the bitumen if it was not a full width road and let the larger vehicles pass. Cattle can be anywhere! Australian Bustard. Freshwater crocodile. Fuel sign at Borroloola.

Broome’s wettest June on record

Grey Teal roosted around a dam alongside Black-fronted Dotterels and Red-kneed Dotterels and Australian Pratincoles were well-camouflaged amongst the cattle. The eastern side of the highway was significantly more flooded and there were Glossy Ibis present in the shallower water alongside Black-winged Stilt. Brolga and martin species.
