It is of course a very popular place for waterbirds to drop by and sometimes there are large numbers of Purple Swamphens and Eurasian Coot present. Quite often there are Australian Pelicans , Brolga and Royal Spoonbills present and the egret species often include Great Egret , Intermediate Egret , Little Egret and Cattle Egret.

The usual ducks were also present – Black-bellied Whistling Duck and White-cheeked Pintail. A pair of Yellow Warblers hunted insects in the canopy, and a Northern Waterthrush did the same just over the surface of the water. Three of them in fact, rare visitors from the north. A Spectacled Thrush foraged among the leaf litter.

Hawking for Nighthawks

Scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks circled overhead, these vocal ducks are often hunted illegally here so it was refreshing to see so many. Two species of icterids populated the area, the presence of either was a direct indicator of the degree of water present. Farmers keep their livestock in this wetland also. Great Blue Heron.

Morning Coffee with Eastern Imperial Eagle

Actually, I am not waiting for them, but for the Eastern Imperial Eagle to come here to hunt Susliks – an eagle from one of the last two remaining nests in Serbia. Susliks are becoming rarer: they need cattle to graze and keep the grass short. On some earlier occasion I observed an Imperial Eagle hunting. It is still cold.

The Great Bustard Search is On (1)

It is estimated that there were more than 1000 Great Bustards in the northern lowlands of Serbia at the beginning of the 20th century, but back then these birds were also present in the south and the east of the country. Habitat destruction combined with hunting has pushed them away from their former breeding grounds.

The Shoebill does not simply present itself but rather, like any object of ardent affection, must be pursued diligently. Of course, we did, soaking in that slate blue beauty long enough to observe a successful hunt and more of its rangy, awkward flight. Lesser Striped Swallow. And look we did. The mighty Shoebill.
