Found from coast to coast in the United States and southern Canada, the White-breasted Nuthatch is missing only from portions of the Rocky Mountains and from a wide band that stretches from the Gulf of Mexico north through Texas into the Great Plains. All twenty-eight species of nuthatch are of the genus Sitta and the family Sittidae.

The Southeastern guide goes a bit more west, to eastern Oklahoma and Texas, so its northern borders lie at the north boundaries of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Brian Bielfelt is a birding biologist who has birded and lived all over the United States but currently calls Texas home. Hunting sandhill cranes in Kentucky is a bad idea from a public relations standpoint, considering the growing cadre of birders and nature enthusiasts for whom cranes are a touchstone species. A species which is the most abundant crane species on the planet.

This did open up the area to a few new species, like this Wilson’s Warbler. A small group of Canada Geese fly over, and out in front of their formation was a pair of Sandhill Cranes.

The Sunshine State isn’t known for its massive snow drifts, nor for the massive flocks of Snow Geese that grace states like Texas and New Mexico every winter. Both bore the darker colorations of the Blue Morph gene, but it was impossible to mistake the species for anything other than a Snow Goose. 2020 was that year for me!
