This Plover is a Semipalmated, and should be leaving for Canada any day now. But this Plover is a Snowy, and will stay right here.

The majority of people who have seen Canada Goose can’t say the same. Case in point, calling Aythya collaris a Ring-necked Duck highlights perhaps the least obvious thing about it, whereas its kissing cousin A. fuligula is most definitely a Tufted Duck. Well, no more! I know these winds had a lot of the birds all settled in, and not moving much, but right off the bat, I got a new Lifer, in a pair of Nuttall’s Woodpeckers. Down in the water, I added Common Goldeneyes, Common Mergansers, Canada Geese , and yes, don’t laugh…my first Mallards of the year.

This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Nearly 800 acres of wetlands and tidal flats provide diverse habitat for the local birds, as well as large numbers of migratory species, including thousands of ducks and geese.

Not impeded by branches or the need to bushwhack, we could paddle right up close to the sound, in this case the merry singing of a White-throated Sparrow. Already impressed with our views so far (both life birds for me), we paddled farther into the shallows, right at the iris edge of the lake. Canada Warbler. Ring-necked Ducks.

Out on one of the rocks that were visible during low tide, a small group of Harlequin Ducks had gathered. Right after getting the anchor set, what to my eyes should I see, but several P urple Martins flying above the boat! Stretching over the water, big boughs dangled their flowers below, so a passerby literally had to duck their heads to avoid the bloom. Across the bridge, my eyes wandered from the white marble columns of the Memorial to a pair of ducks twenty or thirty feet from the edge of the path. Though you know, I was surprised. Also, the absolute worst time to get a new camera set up is right before you leave for a birding trip. I didn’t wait for a rare bird show up, I just went to a local duck pond where the townsfolk feed the waterfowl ample amounts of bread and corn and kept my finger on the shutter button. Of course a camera is half the battle.

Great views were to be had from East Hide and we soon added more birds to our notebook, which included Northern Shoveler , Tufted Ducks , Common Pochard , Little Grebe , Great Crested Grebe , Pied Wagtail , Common Gull , a pair of Canada Geese , Common Redshank and Great Cormorant. No, I was apparently up early in the morning to listen to a Canada Goose honk. So I marked down the Canada Goose and the Great Black-backed Gull that nearly hit me in the head as it flew past too. The first surprise came, as we were driving into town, and not one, but two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers flew right across the road in front of us. This Coopers Hawk flew right up to the roof on a flood control booth, and looked at me like “ What are you doing out here” and promptly flew away. This one flew right over my head.

Not only that, but if the winds are right it can be a magnificent spot to witness both passerine and raptor migration. We only had one Common Grackle , our only finches were House Finch and American Goldfinch , and it took until almost noon before we even spotted a Canada Goose !
