La Paz, the capital city of Baja California Sur, the southern half of the Mexican Baja, has been a real joy, with both the desired weather, and a much expanded variety of bird species. But lets see … I’d say one of my most memorable releases is that of a Purple Martin , a species of special concern in California. I raised them, banded them and released them back to their colony site that summer. Their population is in serious decline, so their breeding colonies are monitored by biologists.

My own encounters with the Western Gull were in the same location that Dawson met them, the Farallon Islands in California. The island is also the largest colony of the species anywhere in their range, making it the capital of their tyrannical empire.
