But this one was a wonderful experience. 11 were new for my California lifelist. But will I bird? Of course I will!

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of August 2021)

I spent Saturday recovering from my red eye back from California but I did get out to coastal Queens on Sunday morning, though I didn’t see much. Fortunately, we have an expansive view of weekends here at 10,000 Birds so I can choose one of the birds I saw in California on Friday before I flew out as my Best Bird of the Weekend.

Vermilion Flycatcher in Colusa County California

The Vermilion Flycatcher ( Pyrocephalus rubinus ) is usually found near the US – Mexican border but we were fortunate this year to find an adult male in northern California! The female of the species is beautiful in her own right but only the male had been seen here. Click on photos for full sized images. I was not disappointed!

Perhaps those people have never had to personally experience increasingly erratic climate patterns. I, however, am still a California boy, in spite of not living in that state for four decades now, and I still keep track of the weather there. I understand there are still people out there who deny human-induced climate change.

Best Bird of the Weekend (First of August 2021)

I added yet another new Monroe County bird in the form of a Stilt Sandpiper this weekend, which is the only way this species earns my Best Bird honors. Corey is enjoying life visiting relatives in southern California and has seen a bunch of birds he hasn’t seen awhile. What was your best bird of the weekend?
