Birding News from Costa Rica at the Start of the Pandemic

Flashback two weeks and my daily check of recent eBird sightings reveals the presence of several tours taking place, lots of cool birds being seen and enjoyed by dozens of birders, no doubt many of the species are lifers, dozens of bird species seen during trips of a lifetime. As I write this, the weather is ironically gorgeous.

Good news for the Wood Stork

I was happy to read that the wood stork ( Mycteria Americana ), a bird near and dear to me, was down-sited from the status of endangered to threatened species. Pied Oystercatcher breeding season 2018

Thankfully due to the long life span of this bird species the population appears to be somewhat stable at the moment. It is not unusual for only one Pied Oystercatcher chick to survive throughout the whole breeding season despite in excess of sixty eggs being laid by sixteen pairs. Nest site with a view. And used the opportunity to send an open letter to the City Mayor, enquiring about his still-unfulfilled promise of this particular area finally becoming protected. Basically, the answer cleared that the protection of the wider Beljarica was upgraded from the city to the state and international level, and will, supposedly, be official soon.

In Costa Rica, June is breeding bird count season. Protected area or not, there has been change in the air, and we need to see how the birds are responding. On Sunday, I didn’t stay long enough to wait for quetzals but did hear a few species, and saw several hummingbirds before moving on to consecutive points along the route.
