My Dark-eyed Juncos are trilling in preparation to retreat to quieter breeding grounds, the Black-Capped Chickadees sing their two notes, and the Song Sparrows absolutely will not shut up. Snow Geese overgrazing their breeding grounds, displacing other Arctic-breeding species and setting themselves up for a fall.

Even more pass through Costa Rica during spring and fall migration, and in summer, you can cross paths with an errant Whimbrel and other shorebirds that opt to extend the vacation in Costa Rica rather than heading way north to the boggy breeding grounds. No sparrow but the dawn chorus was a treat.

For some reason Felonious Jive shared Seagull Steve’s Best Bird of the Year: One of the reasons Seagull Steve went to North Dakota last summer was to spend some time with Baird’s Sparrows. The flowering trees are likely to be visited by Plain Parakeets , Swallow-tailed Hummingbirds and Bananaquits while the lawns are always likely to bring a Rufous-bellied Thrush or a Rufous-collared Sparrow. A pair has been nesting by the roadside for some years, but they are not so predictable outside of the breeding season.
