Whooper Swans at Lake Kussharo, Hokkaido

10,000 Birds

They are ridiculously unafraid of people there – so the cynic in me suspects that swan meat is not regarded as tasty by the Japanese (another explanation, that the Japanese just like animals too much, can presumably be discarded given the country’s very principled approach in insisting on the right to kill whales).

Birding in a Refinery

10,000 Birds

While the P-a-P Wildfowl Trust’s main thrust is the breeding and release of five duck species, the habitat encourages a number of native wetland birds to inhabit and proliferate the area. These two Muscovy drakes brutally battled for about ten minutes right in front of us.

Birding around Chaka, Qinghai, China

10,000 Birds

Apparently, this is another bird species that feels not so certain about flying (many humans have similar feelings). Citrine Wagtails are rare in Shanghai but apparently quite common around Chaka, though unfortunately most of the ones we saw were not in breeding plumage. I blame this on covid-19.

Birding Ruili, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

Ruili is a Chinese city right on the border to Myanmar, and a major border crossing. Fortunately for human males, the typical courtship of humans differs from that of the Coppersmith Barbets , which the HBW describes as follows: “When the nest is ready, the male may begin courtship feeding, offering fruit to the female.
