May is also a good time for herons and egrets, as they are in their full breeding plumage. Little Ringed Plovers are fiercely protective of their cute chicks. Some immature Black-faced Spoonbills may have decided not to go too far north this summer, instead catching fish in Shanghai and looking like a baroque painting.

According to eBird , just over 200 species have been observed at the refuge and just under 1,000 checklists have been submitted. One Common Raven is disappearing towards its nest among the branches of the poplar plantation, only to reappear a few minutes later to give a good chase – aerial acrobatics included – to its first neighbour, the White-tailed Eagle which breeds in the vicinity. Add more than 350 pairs of White Pelicans to that picture, numerous herons and up to 700 pairs of Pygmy Cormorants breeding in the same reedbeds (cover photo)… It must be bursting with activity in spring, but I was there in mid-September. In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching.
