Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding

There was an island in the middle of the river and the tall trees held Yellow-billed Spoonbill nests and there were several families within the vicinity. Not only is it a bird species we rarely encounter, but we had never found a breeding colony before. Yellow-billed Spoonbill family. Juvenile Yellow-billed Spoonbills.

Magpie Geese breed near Broome once again

This year we have had high numbers of Magpie Geese once again in the Broome area and this last weekend we observed our first family groups for the season. The Magpie Geese families are on the move and the family groups that we saw last weekend all consisted of three adults and ten or more goslings.

My large Pied Oystercatcher family

Having found my large Pied Oystercatcher family last week I have spent a lot of time with them this week. The parents moved them from their breeding territory as soon as they could fly, which makes sense because you don’t want them to eat all of the food that you will need to survive until the next breeding season.

Sooty Oystercatcher family at Kalbarri

We rarely encounter family groups of Sooty Oystercatchers Haemotopus fulginosus ophthalmicus at home in Broome, but more commonly we encounter a flock of approximately thirty non-breeding Sooty Oystercatchers at the northern end of Cable Beach. Family of Sooty Oystercatchers. Sooty Oystercatcher adults.

Magpie Geese breeding near Broome

It did seem highly probable that the Magpie Geese would breed in the area this year. This was the first of many Magpie Geese families that we were to come across. Magpie Goose family-two adults. There is water as far as you can see and the families are swimming around in their family groups often very close to the road.

The Cry of the Curlew

Here in the Brecks – an area of poor, sandy soils on the borders of Norfolk and Suffolk – we have a small but important breeding population. They favour the old heaths, but a number of pairs also breed on farmland. Brettenham Heath National Nature Reserve holds the highest density of nesting Curlews in the Brecks.
