Sadly, one of the first birds that we saw was a recently deceased Barn Owl. The Great Egrets , Little Egrets and Intermediate Egrets are in breeding plumage and look quite spectacular. Intermediate Egret in breeding plumage. Wandering Whistling-Ducks under the fence. It appeared to have been hit by a vehicle overnight.

Actually we couldn’t be seen, as it was still too dark, but we did hear a couple of birds to start the day: Tawny Owl and Cetti’s Warbler. There was a good variety of ducks, including Tufted, Gadwall and Shoveler, plus our first waders of the day. The latter was a bonus bird that we hadn’t anticipated.

The little stiff-tails are almost year-round at Jamaica Bay though almost all leave to breed in the summer and in the depths of winter, when the ponds are almost completely frozen, they tend to head for open water. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Go check it out! Get yours today!

But the Mexican Ducks say otherwise. Along with the Sedge/Grass Wrens Ignacio had reported, he had also posted some fine photos of a Great Horned Owl that had roosted on his property. I hardly ever see owls, except for Ferruginous Pygmy Owls , so this was another big draw for me. Boy, were my socks wet an hour later.

These birds (usually juveniles) are clearly linked to the growing breeding population in the region. Pallid Swifts were already back at their breeding sites, while the marshes provided a host of waders, including year-ticks such as Whimbrel, Curlew Sandpiper and Kentish Plover. These are Dunlins.

The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage. In the 70+ episodes, I noticed only the homing Ravens (caged/domesticated) and Pigeons (domestic – in pie). Yes, there were Chicken , too (I remember the chicken soup, not the birds). Snowy Owl, Long Island, NYS. This was a special Snowy Owl encounter in a year of many Snowy Owls. It was, indeed, a Snowy Owl. I drove to the other end of the lot and watched the owl fly back to its meal, smack in the middle of the empty lot. How often does one have a Snowy Owl all to one’s self?

Unfortunately we have only ever seen dead Barn Owls in the Broome area and one day it would be nice to see a bird hunting over the land. New Zealand is really not over populated with owls, but they do have a great little bird, called a Morepork, or Southern Boobook. New Zealand has what is considered to be a relatively rare bird, in the Gray Duck. The have a habit of cross breeding with the local Mallards , and so many of the local New Zealanders call the Grayllards.

The male Bar-tailed Godwit are the first to show us breeding plumage and then the Red Knot and Curlew Sandpipers have two beautiful reds-red wine rather than cranberry juice! Shallows provide an ideal spawning ground for almost 50 fish species and submerged islands breeding ground for more than 100 bird species. Beside several well-showing Red-backed Shrikes , the highlight was one uncommon Lesser Grey Shrike (highly localized ** , with only 700 to 1000 breeding pairs in Serbia). I like driving.
