Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. Kerkini does, of course, attract tremendous numbers of wintering wildfowl, including huge numbers of Common Pochard , by far the most numerous of the diving ducks. There’s always good numbers of all the surface-feeding ducks that you would expect, from Pintail to Eurasian Wigeon. Both Bewick’s and Whooper Swans occur in good numbers.

The prairie areas have Burrowing Owls amongst the bison and there’s Lark Buntings galore. The ponds were pretty much duck-less when we were there as the ducks were moulting but there were a lot of Black-crowned Night-herons and waders like American Avocet.

But the Mexican Ducks say otherwise. Along with the Sedge/Grass Wrens Ignacio had reported, he had also posted some fine photos of a Great Horned Owl that had roosted on his property. My pre-breakfast list was wildfowl dominated, the 10 species I saw ranging from Black-necked Swans to the endemic Falkland Islands Flightless Steamer Duck. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship. With bulk like that, it’s no wonder that they gave up flying long ago.

Bluethroats , Cetti’s and Chiffchaff can be found in the brush alongside the canals and the estuary. The only guaranteed sighting would be the Zitting Cisticola.

We had dipped hard on a long-staying (but not always reliable) Ash-throated Flycatcher at Pettigrew State Park, but while searching for the bird one of the tour participants found a roosting Great Horned Owl , a really nice way to close out the day. Garganey and Ferruginous Duck , as well as Goosanders (aka Common Mergansers) at mountain reservoirs – they are all busy nesting.
