Actually we couldn’t be seen, as it was still too dark, but we did hear a couple of birds to start the day: Tawny Owl and Cetti’s Warbler. There was a good variety of ducks, including Tufted, Gadwall and Shoveler, plus our first waders of the day. According to my phone, I’d walked close to 21,000 steps.

There are charismatic birds like Barrow’s Goldeneye, Evening Grosbeak, Red and White-winged Crossbills; mysterious seabirds like Leach’s Storm-Petrel; ‘little brown jobs’ like Winter Wren and Nelson’s Sparrow; a treasury of warbler species, 27 in all, many state breeders.

One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. The lake is a great place in winter for seeing grebes and diving ducks close up, and can offer some good gulling as well. Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA. Convict Lake, CA. The Sierras.

If you look for ducks in summer or warblers in winter, you’re very likely to be disappointed. Figure out your quarry before you step out and you’ll have a better chance of finding what you seek. Egyptian vulture clearly knowing where I left my smartphone “Lahme Ente” – lame duck Any slow person may be called a “lame duck“ in German, but today it is most commonly used in traffic to describe an annoyingly slow car. The origin of this expression clearly lies in the slow, dopey waddling gait of a duck on land.
