Then, at 6 PM, as the sun disappeared completely over the horizon, the ducks on the pond started massing on the west end of the pond, with many small flocks from all over the pond flying in to the west end until it was basically covered with ducks. Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. Kerkini does, of course, attract tremendous numbers of wintering wildfowl, including huge numbers of Common Pochard , by far the most numerous of the diving ducks.

Starting the New Year by trying to see as many species as possible is something of a birding tradition. My diary notes that the New Year dawned grey and windy, but I rose early, walked six miles before breakfast and noted a modest 26 species of birds. The latter are great bruisers of ducks, built like a small battle ship.

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. Birding that starts with the largest eagle of the continent certainly bears promises… The next stop is the town park in Opovo, north of Belgrade, where local bird expert Ceda Vuckovic reported one, locally rare, Short-eared Owl. Long-eared Owls are irresistibly cute. Not far from it, several Long-eared Owls douse in winter sun.

The Skylarks and Northern Wheatears in the barren fields attract all four European species of harrier (but no Montagu’s for Christmas, sorry). Merlin and Short-Eared Owl are almost a “dead cert” in winter. If you feel guilty about that, scan the river for ducks and geese and check out the muddy margins.

In Costa Rica, despite there seeming to be less enthusiasm than previous GBDs, enough local and visiting birders dedicated most of the day to binocular use to give us a fantastic total of 731 species !

We had dipped hard on a long-staying (but not always reliable) Ash-throated Flycatcher at Pettigrew State Park, but while searching for the bird one of the tour participants found a roosting Great Horned Owl , a really nice way to close out the day. The owl had put me at 195 and I felt pretty confident I would get there.

Fortunately, a few minutes later a Great Horned Owl pair did a duet for me from somewhere west of the platform and that was worth having gotten up while most people were still sound asleep. Osprey are nice but after awhile you wish one would be a different species. It’s lonely in the dark with no birds to keep you company.
