My camera and binoculars, protected by the light coat I had packed, were wet but fully functional. The Red-winged Blackbirds were wet. But I went through some anxiety concerning those. Not only was I very, very wet, so were the birds that I saw. I’m fond of photos of birds in a visible mist or drizzle.

The juvenile Chinese Blackbirds get older but still look kind of stupid. Some of the more conservative Light-vented Bulbuls in my compound were trying to make the wearing of a tie mandatory for the species. Anyway, back to the somewhat less interesting birdlife within my prison-compound. So, I took these photos for them.

Costa Rica is well known for national parks and other protected areas than offer access to tropical ecosystems dripping with biodiversity. As is typical of urban birding in Costa Rica, we had small flocks of this species fly over and good looks at the White-crowned Parrot , the other most common parrot in the valley. Blackbirds.

However, there are those species which have a hard time bringing attention to themselves such as Yellow-shouldered Blackbird , Giant Nuthatch , and Vinaceous-breasted Parrot. Regardless of their popularity, these species and the threatened ecosystems they inhabit are equally spectacular. Curassows are such stately birds.

It was here that I discovered my first White Ibis, my first Eastern Towhee, my first Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher , and while these species may be “common” to me now they filled me with wonder then. Osprey and Royal Terns soared on the coastal winds overhead, and Red-winged Blackbirds sounded their raspy calls just about everywhere.

We saw sparrows–a total of 14 species–and we saw many other great prairie birds, and we often saw them perched on posts. Brewer’s Blackbirds often joined the hordes of Red-winged Blackbirds flitting in and out of the taller grasses and few shrubs.

To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. Point Defiance, Protection Island, Hurricane Hill, and Sunrise all felt our footsteps to say nothing of Carkeek Park, Discovery Park, the Space Needle, and Top Pot Doughnuts. Eat there.

High overhead, swallows are going over and in the fields, blackbirds move in undulating flocks. Such is the case of a large coffee field near home where I had seen good numbers of warblers, other migrant species, and resident birds. I chanced to glance at a bird perched atop the Oak tree in my back yard, figuring it was one of the Blackbirds or Grackles that had recently returned to my neighborhood. The beech forests were dense, landscapes stunning, only that wind… Birds were hiding from it, too, with mostly t**s ( Coal , Long-tailed and Great ), a few thrushes ( Mistle , Song and Eurasian Blackbird ) and numerous Common Chaffinches showing. Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. To my disappointment the biggest and most visible species I saw was the introduced Common (Ring-necked) Pheasant , and my first lifer was the equally introduced Gray Partridge.
