It isn’t just tourists and game hunters that like them though; Painted Wolves are also big fans, as they are easier to bring down than the larger species but have more meat to eat than a small duiker. The crest on the back becomes erect during breeding displays.

It’s not only the fact that you see more birds of prey than in “normal” years, they also show a different behaviour. However, they tend to be rather secretive due to hunting pressure (by humans, not too many wolves yet in Germany), and are therefore a rare sight especially in densely populated areas.

The park did have a pack of African Wild Dogs, or Painted Wolves, the species I had gone to Africa to see. They had been the species I’ve most wanted to see, above any bird or fish or mammal, for many years, and they didn’t remotely disappoint. It wasn’t massively easy to bird this park, at least not as a volunteer.

Ethiopia , a landlocked country situated in the Horn of Africa, has firmly established itself as one of Africa’s top birding destinations. Not much was known about Ethiopia’s birds and there was no decent fieldguide. Addis Ababa is a good a site as any for this bird.

I am not entirely sure whether most birders outside Germany know or realize that Germany still has a decent population of one of Europe’s most attractive and desired bird species: the Great Bustard Otis tarda. As it turns out, many of those very birds that I had hoped to find, all had the same idea, and had moved out of the park as well. I would have to say the most common bird in the park, must be the Common Raven. We picked this as much for the location as its chance for some decent birds. Several impressive temples and monasteries are dotted around Leh and the birding can be excellent with species such as Ibisbill, Solitary Snipe and Mountain Leaf Warbler to name but a few. Wolves can be encountered anywhere in the park. Monasteries such as this abound in the vicinity of Leh.

I find it astonishing that people argue of whether feral cats are bad for birds in North America. Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range.
