This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. This particular borrow pit is right beside the highway around seventy kilometres from Broome and is always worth stopping at.

They’re not the Lammergeyer – they’re not even close, as the Lammergeyer dwells alone in the genus Gypaetus – but the Egyptian Vulture and Cinereous Vulture are worthy birds in their own right. And then there’s the Griffon Vulture. Ultimately, this was the only vulture I was to see on my Spanish adventure.

When you travel north along the highway from Broome towards Willare and Derby you come to a wide bridge with a sign that says “Cockatoo Creek” I would highly recommend that you pull up on the right after you have crossed the bridge and park where the plaque is for the official opening of it. We have recently returned from a “croc and rock” birding trip that took us further into the Kimberley to visit some gorges, see some crocodiles and a great variety of bird-life. It is flat open country as you approach Wolfe Creek Crater and to be perfectly honest we were not expecting to find too much bird-life around due to the complete lack of water other than what would be at cattle troughs. Whenever you encounter one bird species near the edge of the track it is worth stopping, because invariably there are several species in the vicinity. As soon as you come close to flowering plants there are birds taking off all around you. Grevillea refracta have been flowering for many weeks and the birds are attracted to them.

On our recent camping and birding trip away we passed through the small town of Fitzroy Crossing, which is the next town along the Great Northern Highway heading north and is approximately 400 kilometres from Broome. Among these bizarre plants we observed Orange Chats , Crimson Chats , Zebra Finch and Crested Pigeons. Large numbers of Australian Shelduck lined the edges of the main water body on our right as we moved slowly along the track. They are obviously a salt bush that loves the area. “Dreadlock plant”!
