With a transit time of at least two hours from any of the accommodations typically used for birding, this relatively pristine area is awash with surprises. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

I contemplated how the birds were able to achieve such acceleration after sleeping all night without an ounce of caffeine. Once the swifts ascended well above the canopy, they began to look like birds again. Meanwhile, the forest edge was awash with birds. The birds were for the most part playing hard to get, though.

Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference. On arrival at the train station at East Hills you are soon on the water’s edge of the Georges River and there are plenty of birds in the surrounding bush as well as on the water.

With enough planning, you can enjoy a family-friendly, bird-rich vacation in the Panama Canal zone. Any dedicated birder visiting Panama City should first consider the Canopy Tower , one of the most important and beloved birding lodges in the Americas. Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals.

The Red Wattlebird, Spotted Doves and Common Mynas are the most common birds on this trail. As I continued south I stopped at each small jetty to see which species were roosting and the sea was substantially rougher than on my previous visit. Black-winged Stilt at St Kilda. Hoary-headed Grebes. Promenade and art tiles. Feeding frenzy.

In many ways, birding Wawushan is a nightmare for a solitary and crowd-hating birder like me. An unnamed bird guide called them “avoidless tourists”, which sums it up rather nicely. So, all this makes birding this place an occasionally less than pleasant experience. Never fails to startle them.

Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. We saw over 50 species of birds during the afternoon and despite all the warnings we did not see any snakes! Of course you don’t really care if you are a duck!

Open from dawn to dusk 7 days a week, it has an eBird hotspot list of 79 species from 16 submissions. Timings are 08.00 ‘til 17.00.
