Like many birders, I regularly submit short lists of birds seen at my place of employment. But I also sometimes go there, specifically to bird, for hours. Specifically, the area surrounding our church is my best place to see sparrows, both residents and our (much more common) winter migratory sparrows.

Back when birding was still a solitary activity for me, my records show that my first outings yielded 75-85 species. Birds being easily offended, and all that. But still beautiful.

Vesper Sparrows in Queens

Dawn Over the Mighty Rupununi

Some movement in the grasses almost to our feet pulled me out of gazing and back into birding mode. These tiny birds were barely distinguishable from the ground – but they were certainly birds. Grassland Sparrow , Leon says excitedly. The large white birds were mostly Jabiru with some Maguari Storks in the mix.

A mundane weekend makes for mundane birds, so I had to settle for watching House Sparrows chew through my feeders. In the parking lot of a shopping plaza, however, he saw a Peregrine Falcon come plunging out of nowhere to absolutely obliterate a Rock Pigeon. What was your best bird of the weekend? How about you?
