Where the Sparrows Are

Specifically, the area surrounding our church is my best place to see sparrows, both residents and our (much more common) winter migratory sparrows. The one exception is the Chipping Sparrow , which can be found easily wherever there is grass. Happily, nobody would struggle to identify a Lark Sparrow.

Common birds, you see, tend to have simple names, like House Sparrow, House Finch, or House Wren. A hyphen in a bird’s “first” name can occur pretty much anywhere, which is why the United States has a good supply of birds like White-crowned Sparrows and Yellow-rumped Warblers. But not all hypens are created equal.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of November 2021)

A mundane weekend makes for mundane birds, so I had to settle for watching House Sparrows chew through my feeders. In the parking lot of a shopping plaza, however, he saw a Peregrine Falcon come plunging out of nowhere to absolutely obliterate a Rock Pigeon.

New Year’s Birding in Central Mexico

Among our highlights were 5 doves species, a full 9 hummingbirds, 6 herons/egrets, 3 hawks and 2 falcons, 4 woodpeckers, all of 12 Tyrant Flycatchers, 3 vireos, 6 New World Sparrows, 4 New World Orioles in different shades of orange, 16 New World Warblers, 2 tanagers, and 6 grosbeaks and buntings. But still beautiful.
