On Saturday morning I decided to look for early migrants and lingering winter birds out at the southeasternmost part of Queens, the tip of Breezy Point. But I had no luck with the wintering land-birds at all. Instead, I focused on the ducks and shorebirds, of which there were plenty! Those duck hormones are starting to flow!

The ducks landed in oil waste pits in western North Dakota in May and June where they were found dead. The increasing number of dead birds has state officials debating whether to ban waste oil pits and require companies to recycle liquid drilling waste. The so-called reserve pits are used during oil and gas drilling operations.

Just as she was getting around to finishing, another blackbird flew in and she ducked to evade the attack, dropping the severed gopher head which promptly stuck to the side of the streetlight just out of reach. Lake Apopka Restoration Area in Lake County Florida is fast-becoming one of the best bird magnets in all of Florida. The high nutrient loading led to massive and unprecedented algal blooms which in turn killed productive plants and changed the once crystal-clear lake into pea soup.
