Years ago, I became a wildlife volunteer and advocate because of a cat who caught a bird. Back then, I didn’t know enough about birds, but I knew a lot about cats. I surprised her and she dropped the bird before vaporizing again. They simply helped me with my bird. That was my first trip to California Wildlife Center.

Note the short legs, stout body and white rump and tail I see Muntjac on virtually every birding (or dog-walking) outing, as these small Asian deer are now very numerous around my home in the Suffolk Brecks. Rather more are killed in collisions with cars. Muntjac venison is very good to eat, but despite this, not many are shot.

This is approximated by the size of the animal, but really, this has to be adjusted for depending on modality of killing. How many wild birds are eaten by either feral Cats or “outdoor Cats?” Which would be even worse.

My dog is a livestock guardian breed so when she saw the mouse I just said to leave it and now it walks right past her too she ignores it like the spiders, I made sure she was well trained. A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. Heartworm larvae are carried by mosquitoes and then transmitted to the dog’s bloodstream when the mosquito bites.
