The month starts with many birds and ends with very few – but some of those are quite spectacular. If there ever was a misnamed bird, it is the white-faced morph of the Black Bulbul. Apparently, the bird can warm itself if it gets cold. May is the month in which spring migration basically comes to an end in Shanghai.

New York City Park Department Contractor Tears Up Imperiled Sparrows Home

Joshua Malbin has been birding in Brooklyn, NY for more than 10 of his 15-plus years doing it so far. A New York City Parks Department contractor just wiped out a breeding population of sparrows in tons of trouble already, on land owned by the parks department that was supposed to be protected as “Forever Wild.”

Birding Ruoergai, Sichuan, China

The poster bird of this area is the near-threatened Black-necked Crane. The HBW even mentions the importance of Ruoergai for this species: “Key sites for migrants include the Ruoergai Plateau (China), which is also an important breeding area” Common Mergansers also seem to use these wetlands as breeding area.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. And us, the birders who travel here from March to May to worship the birds as they seek to survive.

It is near a river, attracting some birds that like to eat wet food. As the national bird of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, the African Fish Eagle is usually very busy whenever it stays in these countries, giving speeches, opening shopping centers, etc. The birds I asked about this pretended not to be related to anyone though.
