Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. It has been twelve weeks now since the first pair of Pied Oystercatchers attempted to breed along the stretch of beach that we survey and as with each year there have been setbacks. There was a long stretch of beach that did not have a breeding pair, but it was in amongst the vehicles and nudists that frequent the area at this time of year.

So, I asked around and was told that Qinghai is the place to go to for birds in China in August. Going to Qinghai usually starts with a flight to Xining, the capital. But it is not.

This year we have continued to monitor the breeding of several pairs of Pied Oystercatchers along the coast in Broome from Gantheaume Point to Willie Creek on the south side. Gantheaume Point offers both food and protection for a young Pied Oystercatcher chick, which is very important when they are unable to fly. Typically the whole Pied Oystercatcher family spend a lot of time either feeding or roosting.

Our first Pied Oystercatcher eggs for this year’s breeding season were laid early and were due to hatch last weekend. The eggs usually hatch out quite close together and then the family can all move away from the nest site. They are a large chunky bird with substantial legs when they hatch out.

It is at the same time of year that the migratory shorebirds that spend part of each year in Broome are also breeding, but in the Arctic. There was little movement by the family during the heat of the day except to fly to the shoreline for a drink and to cool their feet.
