Many are familiar with dissecting owl pellets, but several birds will caste a pellet including hawks, eagles, gulls, herons and heck, I once witnessed a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher hack up a small one. For example, since eagles and hawks tend to rip their prey apart and have stronger digestive acids, their pellets look like wads of fur.

Ornate Hawk-Eagle. Sometimes, this one forages for insects and bats near street lights adjacent to forest. A real killer of a bird, like someone took a goshawk and crossed it with a dinosaur maybe. Not common but regular at various sites with larger areas of rainforest. Black-and-white Ow. that are fairly common in Costa Rica.

The graveyard shift is on duty: several bats are chasing insects through the evening coolness. Rare species include Western Capercaillie , Golden Eagle , Eurasian Pygmy and Tengmalm’s Owls , White-backed and European Three-toed Woodpeckers , Red-breasted Flycatcher , etc. The Song Thrush becomes silent. The shades are impenetrable now.

At nighttime this allowed some impromptu spotlighting, and we found many spiders, insects, bats as well as a Lesser Mousedeer and a sleeping Malaysian Flycatcher. Wallace’s Hawk Eagle was a lifer. We were able to take a thoroughly enjoyable boat ride on Lake Chamo, whose shores teem with birds, including such typical African species as African Fish Eagle, Goliath Heron the world’s largest, Yellow-billed Stork and the incomparable Hamerkop , a species in its own family.

In the meantime, check the snags for Bat Falcon and watch for soaring Barred Hawk, Short-tailed Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk , and maybe a hawk-eagle. If one or a pair aren’t being obvious by soaring around, look for a bright white spot in the greenery on the other side. A White Hawk that was not on the other side of the canyon.

The Bald Eagles that nest along the river had apparently had a very poor breeding season, the high water making their usual fishing spots less productive, so the ornithologist told me; we only saw one of the adults. By the time we pulled up on shore, the Common Nighthawks and the bats were out.

The Hudwit edged out more than 650 other birds on my Costa Rican year list by a large margin because unlike Resplendent Quetzal , Maroon-chested Ground-Dove , Ornate Hawk-Eagle , and even Unspotted Saw-whet Owl , the last and only documentation for Hudsonian Godwit in Costa Rica occured in 1975. We also got great views of a very small mammal, Wahlberg’s Epauletted Fruit Bat, at Satara. This immature Verreaux’s Eagle-owl was one of the first birds I saw at Kruger, on the introductory afternoon ride through the park. Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls are amongst the heaviest and longest owls in the world.
