In North America, at least in the eastern part of it, we celebrate the return of the Baltimore Oriole to parks and farms this time of year. Troupials raise their own chicks, generally 3 to 4 per clutch, they just steal the nest in which they raise them. There is no doubt about it, this is a striking bird.

Our group travels into the wetlands of the San Tomás reserve by boat (small, wooden boats masterfully steered by local workers) to a small platform on the edge of the channel where we make a semicircle and wait. The bird flies around our group, alights onto a bush and, just as I raise my camera, dives into the bush.

The very excited response was that she had been banded as a fledgling in 1983, which made her, at 27 years and 9 months of age, the second oldest living wild Red-tailed hawk ever recovered in all of North America. A group of us gathered to release her near the spot where she was found. This filled me with both glee and dismay.
