Located in the Gulf of Guinea (the “armpit” of Africa), Sao Tome and Principe doesn’t only have a decent number of species overall, but with 28 endemics (staggering 18% of the total), it has a higher endemism level than the Galapagos! Almost all endemics are possible (although 2 are hard to get), among some 70 species birdable in 10 days.

My number one choice at the time was Egyptian Goose ( Alopochen aegyptiacus ), an adaptable sheldgoose from Africa that was rapidly becoming established in peninsular Florida. Furthermore, this little parrot has another aspect going for it. The range of Common Hill Myna in southeast Florida has been slowly contracting.

While green is rather common color in avian plumage, it rarely attains the flamboyance of a parrot’s chartreuse or the emerald of a hummingbird. It certainly looks good on birds from the Americas ( Elaenia , Flatbill , Greenlet , Piculet , Piha , Siskin , Thornbill ) to Africa ( Flycatcher , Thrush ). The attraction is obvious.

Egyptian Goose ( Alopochen aegyptiacus ), a common species in Africa, is my top pick for becoming the next ABA-countable exotic from Florida. A recent survey in Miami-Dade recorded this species as the most numerous parrot species in the entire county, outnumbering all other species including Monk Parakeet by a couple hundred birds.

The Abyssinian Empire was the only African nation to survive what is now known as the Scramble for Africa, and was never colonized (it did endure 6 brutal years under Fascist Italian occupation).

It was not a flycatcher at all, but an exotic (and equally bizarre) from Africa, which certainly escaped from someone’s cage or perhaps even migrated from the small breeding population of escapees in southern California. I know birders just as well as I know birds, and I was not ready to put all my faith in this fantastic sighting.

Africa’s Rosy Bee-eater is vivid enough to burn your retina while the Rosy Pipit of Asia flaunts but a flush of pink. Rose also adorns the anatomy of certain buntings, becards, chats, fruit-doves, parrots, parakeets, pihas, and tangers, tropical birds all. The Asian Rosy Finch is found, well, elsewhere. Red-legged Seriemas , South America’s answer to Africa’s Secretarybird, patrolled the grassland in pairs for prey while C**k-tailed Tyrants fluttered over areas of tall grass with the flight profile of a toy airplane. Low, gnarled forest found along streams had the skulky Brasilia Tapaculo and diminutive Gray-backed Tachuri.
