It’s a unique bird, even its scientific name is wonderful, so it’s not surprising that Gerard Gorman, Woodpecker Expert Supreme, has written a book all about the species. I was surprised to learn that there are two Wryneck species in the Jynx genus: Eurasian Wryneck, Jynx torquilla, and Red-throated Wryneck, Jynx ruficollis.

This species is easier to find in Derby than Broome and the Derby wharf is a good place to go and observe them. The Kimberley Flycatcher had previously been a sub-species of the Lemon-bellied Flycatcher , but is now a species in its own right as of August 2019. The photo below I took in 2014 at Marlow Lagoon.

I visited Hong Kong from February 20-27, 2014. Mai Po Nature Reserve : world famous locale for shorebirds, waterfowl, waders, and wetland birds; wintering grounds for certain endangered species. While I was on a call with Corey, what should fly into the tree right outside my window but a Yellow-throated Warbler ? This species is quite rare during migration in my area and this bird was, in one sense, way too early but, for my purposes, right on time. The Best Bird of my weekend was a real find.

The family has about 37 species, but that includes several fulvettas – only 21 of the species have “parrotbill” in their names (and frankly, the bills of fulvettas do not look like those of parrots at all). A paper on breeding of the species was actually researched right here at Wawushan.

Way back in 2014, when I saw my first Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireo near the little town of Pino Real, and shared the sighting on a birders’ chat group, it took just over a month for the first biologist/ornithologist to visit me. The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

Yep, those two guys identified 331 species in one small area, sans vehicle. Can you imagine even identifying more than 250 species while walking and using a canoe in one day? Essentially, their record was broken in 1986 by Terry Stevenson and John Fanshawe when they recorded 342 species during one calendar day in Kenya.

Most views of alcids that I have had are of birds flying by pretty far offshore or bobbing on the open ocean while I was standing on a boat trying not to get seasick.
