Several times, the answer was “Africa”, which, being a continent and not a country, I excluded from the statistics, but will further comment below. Also, destinations mentioned only once (by a single respondent) were excluded from the statistics, because I saw them more like a statistical error than a popular destination.

A few hours of birding on Mauritius Island

Being an island, Mauritius has its share of endemics, extinct endemics (the dodo again), and introduced species. The Red Fody is an introduced species, though from nearby, sort of (Madagascar). Of course, the Common Myna is not a native species either. I saw a few of each group, with the obvious exception of the second one.

Broome’s birds get a battering

As you can see, both species of bulbs are flowering and there is a good reason for that. Broome weather statistics are a mean average rainfall of 194.1mm for the whole of January, which is our wettest month normally. We also have white Rain Lilies Pancratium zeylanicum that also depend on the air pressure changing to flower.

But is it safe?

Fortunately, at this time of year there are also a good number of high-quality migratory species: Least Flycatcher. Hey, even the common species give good photos in Paso Ancho! V irginia’s Warbler. Lots of Lucifer Hummingbirds at this time of year. And a female Lazuli Buntin g. I dipped on the Painted Buntings this time.

Return of the Waders

Then again, given that the paper has 12 authors, this may just be statistics at work. It seems that at Nanhui, somebody is trying to kill even more than 2 bird(s) (species) with one stone (to be more accurate, not a single stone but a massive amount of concrete). While small, these birds cover impressive migration routes.
